At HOPE (High school and college Outreach and Peace Education) we
are working with the leaders of tomorrow: educating youth about their
rights as students; their rights with regards to the military; alternatives
to joining the military for educational funding; and service learning
and internship opportunities available.
We also offer information on: Draft registration, Conscientious
Objection, Documentation of CO Claim, Military Recruitment Practices,
Delayed Entry Program Information, Opt-Out forms, and Current legislation
that specifically affects them. Our goal is to empower the youth
of today with the knowledge and current information that will enable
them to make their own responsibly informed decisions.
HOPE is partially funded by the AGAPE
Foundation, and is supported by trained, dedicated, volunteers
participating in counseling and training for:
- Draft Registration Counseling/Selective Service
- Conscientious Objection
- Documentation of CO Claim
- Military Recruitment Practices
- Delayed Entry Program (DEP) Information and Separation
- Youth Legal Rights
Counseling is offered through the Peace & Justice Center of Sonoma
County. The counseling service assists people in navigating the selective
service and C.O. filing procedures. Please make
contact with us if you have questions or need any of the above
services. The Peace Center also maintains a library of other HOPE
resources.
Interested in becoming a trained counselor? We offer Counselor
Trainings on a periodic basis. Call the Peace & Justice Center
of Sonoma County for more information at (707) 575-8902 or visit
the volunteer page if you are interested
in becoming a counselor. We are also seeking volunteers to staff
this effort. We provide information directly to youth through high
school and college campus programs.
The phrase "the draft" conjures up images from the Vietnam
War: weekly body counts, young men making agonized decisions. More
than 20 years later, no one is actually being drafted. However,
young people still have important decisions to make about military
service.
